Ministry of Children and Youth Services announces new changes to the Ontario Autism Program (OAP)

June 08, 2017
On Thursday June 8, the Minister of Children and Youth Services Michael Coteau unveiled the new Ontario Autism Program at ErinoakKids’ Autism In-Centre at our North Sheridan site. Under the new program, set to begin on June 26, all children and youth up to age 18  with an autism diagnosis will receive service that is family-centered, flexible and responsive to their needs, strengths and goals.
Highlights of the program include:
  • A single point of access: One entry point to access the Ontario Autism program in each of the nine service areas.
  • Family and provider role in decision making and inter-professional collaboration: Families will be actively engaged in the assessment, goal-setting and intervention planning process for their child.
  • Service based on need: Intensity and duration of the services a child or youth receives is based on their needs and strengths, regardless of age. A clinical assessment of children will determine their service plan. Transition planning within the program will be individualized, planned in advance, and achieved in partnership with the family, program professionals, and other service providers.
  • A direct funding approach. A new direct funding option will be implemented by the end of this year. This will provide all families with a choice between receiving direct service or receiving funding to purchase their child’s service.
  • Safe, effective autism services. The qualifications of autism practitioners, including those in the private (for profit) sector will be subject to accountability and oversight measures to help ensure children have access to safe, quality autism services.
