New ErinoakKids facilities provide more opportunities for client growth and improvement

IMG_6178-(1).JPGWhen Gavin was three years old and receiving speech therapy services alongside his twin brother Tyler at ErinokakKids, mom Allison Brunn started noticing a difference in speech progress between both her sons.

“Over time, we saw a lot of positive changes in Tyler's speech development,” says Brunn. “But Gavin did not excel quickly like his brother.”

Allison and her husband Kelly began to realize that some of Gavin’s behaviors, such as lack of eye contact, repetitive movements, an inability to have anything touch his head and his fascination with spinning wheels, were not simply because of a developmental delay, but something more.

After many visits to consult different doctors, Gavin started the developmental assessment process through ErinoakKids and was diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder in February of 2017. And in April of that year, Gavin began attending the full-day Autism program at ErinoakKids.

“Since that day, ErinoakKids has been a staple in our family life,” says Allison. ” No question has ever been too small.”

With the move to the new ErinoakKids sites, Gavin has never been more excited to go to his appointments. As Gavin loves the outdoors and spending time at parks and play centres, it will come as no surprise to learn that his favorite space in the new facility is the outdoor therapeutic playground.

“The outdoor play areas have assisted him with his sensory needs, and encouraged him to finally wear a hat on his head when it is cold outside!” says Brunn.  “For Gavin, this is a huge achievement.”

With the new facilities’ warm and comforting atmosphere, Gavin, like many other ErinoakKids clients, discovered a newfound love for exploring, learning and playing. He was once a boy who would sit in a corner and keep to himself. Now, he is initiating play with others, verbally communicating his feelings and using his imagination to make up fun stories.

“We are eternally grateful for ErinoakKids and the marvelous staff that work here,” says mom Allison. “In these new buildings, kids like Gavin are working hard to take small steps forward in achieving their goals.”

Gavin, this loving, exceptional and funny boy, has become strong willed and opinionated, with a love for all things to do with outer space and rocket ships and a deep interest in cooking. At six years of age, and with the progress that Gavin is making, Gavin and Tyler are finally able to build that important brotherly bond.

“With the continued support and encouragement of ErinoakKids, these children can continue down their own path of success and families can have positive dreams and hopes for the future” says Allison Brunn.

Did you know that by introducing your child to early life skills from ages five to seven (such as helping to make your child’s bed, tidy his or her room, unpack and pack his or her school backpack, and set the table and clear dishes at the end of a meal) is preparing him or her for the responsibility of expanded home and community-based life skills as a young adult?
