Fall 2018 Therapeutic Recreation

Check out the exciting therapeutic recreation activities happening this fall at all three ErinoakKids sites! 
 

Please note:

Only current ErinoakKids clients are eligible to participate unless otherwise stated. New participants may be asked to complete an assessment to ensure suitability for the program. Acceptance to the program is at the discretion of the facilitator.

Programs do not provide one-to-one support for attendant care (lifting, toileting, or administration of medication) or behavioral support. If assistance is required, it is the responsibility of the parent/guardian or appointed attendant to fulfill these duties. Volunteers can only facilitate your child’s participation in activities and are not permitted to assist with these duties.

If registration is low, the program may be canceled and fees will be fully refunded.

Songs and Stories

A group for children and caregivers who enjoy music, circle time, stories socializing and free play fun.

Participant criteria:
  • Ages: 2-5
  • Able to attend with a parent or caregiver

Sing Along Social
$125
Come spend time with your family and share your love of music by exploring various instruments and interactive activities! All family members welcome!

Participant criteria:
  • Enjoy classic children’s songs and nurseryrhymes
  • Enjoys singing and moving to music
  • Willing to have lots of fun
Wednesdays | 4- 5 p.m.
Sept. 26 – Nov. 14


Getting Fit for Life
$50
This program combines activities from our You’re the Chef program that aims to teach youth how to prepare healthy and tasty recipes, focusing on vegetable and fruit ingredients. This program also explores how the overall health and wellbeing are impacted by nutrition and physical activity. If you like helping in the kitchen, curious about learning new recipes and interested in trying new physical activities for all abilities, this program is for you!

Participant criteria:
  • Ages: 12-16
  • Able to participate in group activities anddiscussion with minimal support
  • Able to demonstrate awareness of safety precautions in a kitchen environment
  • Ability to understand how ones nutrition helps to improve your health and wellbeing.
  • Willingness to try new physical activities.
  • Willingness to try and experiment with new foods.

Wednesdays | 5 - 6:30 p.m.
Oct. 3 – Nov. 28 (no session on Oct. 31)


Family Yoga
$160 for 8 weeks per family (up to 4 family members) | $40 per extra family member
Yoga-Tastic 4 Kids is a fun filled yoga program that teaches children deep belly breathing, breathing techniques and yoga postures. Your child will fall in love with meditation, freedom of movement and heart-centered living. Taught by Parenting Solutions practitioner Sandra Doweck who combines her background in behavioural development and the yoga theory together to create this unique yoga program.

Recommended for children 3 and up, child must be accompanied by a parent.

Thursdays | 6:30 - 7:30 p.m.
Oct. 4 – Nov. 22


Boccia Bratz
Boccia is an adapted sport that can be played by all, no matter your ability and level. Work on your physical, social and mental skills while having fun and staying active with your friends. New activities each week will work on different skills such as communication, balance, object manipulation, and more so athletes can gain physical literacy skills that will help them stay active through life! Siblings are welcome to join the group if appropriate.

Participant criteria:
  • Ages: 4 plus
  • Able to participate in group activities anddiscussion with minimal support
  • Able to attend to a task for a minimum of 5 minutes
  • Interested in learning about adapted sport

Mississauga

Boccia Bratz

Seed to Feed Gardening
$50
This program allows participants to follow the life cycle of various foods, from planting seeds to food on the table. Participants will gain knowledge of seasonal plants and an appreciation for nature. To enhance participants’ gardening experience and their understanding of the natural world they will have the chance to explore the new Sensory Path which includes animal tracks, a leaf jigsaw puzzle and a hands-on display case featuring local animal skulls and pelts. Space is limited!

Where: Riverwood Conservancy, 4170 Riverwood Park Lane, Mississauga

Participant criteria:
  • Ages: 8-13
  • Able to participate in group activities and discussion with minimal support
  • Able to attend to a task for a minimum of five minutes
  • This program takes place within a large public conservation area and may not be appropriate for children who may tend to wander

Tuesday, Oct. 9 | 4:30 - 5:30 p.m.


Family Skate
$100 per session OR $180 for two sessions
This program provides ErinoakKids clients and their families with an opportunity to participate and explore skating as a fun leisure activity. Adapted skating equipment, such as sledges and skate mates, will also be available for participants to try.

Please note: this is not a formal skating lesson.

Where: Erin Mills Twin Arena, 3205 Unity Dr., Mississauga

Participant criteria:
  • Ages: 3 plus
  • Participants must supply their own skates and wear a properly fitting skating helmet
  • One parent or guardian must attend the program with each client. If a parent is not able to assist on the ice, a volunteer can be assigned to a client to support them while skating. Volunteers may be able to help siblings on a first come, first served basis, after support has been allocated to clients

Session 2: Jan. 7 – Mar. 4 (no skate Feb. 18)

  • Able to attend with a parent or caregiver

My Magic Hands
$60
A professional magician teaches children the secrets of great magic tricks and how to perform them for family and friends. At the end of the six week program, the participants stage and star in “The Big Show” a magic show recital showcasing their accomplishments.

Participant criteria:
  • Ages: 8-12
  • Able to participate in group activities with minimal support and/or redirection
  • Able to follow directions
Mondays | 4:30 - 5:30 p.m.
Sept. 24 – Oct. 29


Everybody’s Got Talent
$65 per session
Come explore your talent and share your love of music with various instruments and interactive activities!

Participant criteria:
  • Ages: 10-14
  • Able to participate in group activities with minimal support and/or redirection
  • Able to follow directions
Tuesdays | 7:30 - 8:30 p.m.
Session 1: Oct. 9 – Oct. 30
Session 2: Nov. 13 – Dec. 18


Little Chefs
$80
This introductory program will allow participants the opportunity to develop the knowledge and skills in meal preparation. Simple weekly menus will be planned and prepared, while learning kitchen safety, hygiene and clean up.

Participant criteria:
  • Ages: 8-12
  • Able to participate in group activities and discussion with minimal support
  • Able to demonstrate awareness of safety precautions in a kitchen environment
  • Priority will be given to new participants
Wednesdays | 4:30 - 6:30 p.m.
Oct. 10 – Nov. 28


Bollywood Dance
A high energy hour of Bollywood dancing with a focus on fun and fitness! Dancers will explore different types of dance and learn a new routine each week. This program is offered in partnership with Shiamak Davar International Inc. Victory Arts Program.

Participant criteria:
  • Ages: 8 plus
  • Able to participate in group activities with minimal support and/or redirection
  • Able to follow a simple series for three to four step directions
