CIBC donates $100,000 to support ErinoakKids Respite Program for children with complex care needs

December 03, 2015
Donation marks largest in organization’s history for respite care
MISSISSAUGA, ON, Dec. 3, 2015 — Families of children with special needs received a boost today thanks to a $100,000 multi-year commitment from CIBC earmarked for ErinoakKids’ Respite Program. CIBC’s donation marks the single largest respite donation in the organization’s history.

“CIBC’s donation represents an important step forward for families with children with complex care needs,” said ErinoakKids President and CEO Bridget Fewtrell. “This funding will allow ErinoakKids to continue to provide a space where these children can be cared for and nurtured outside the home by healthcare professionals for a day, weekend, or 24/7, giving their families a much-needed break from their caregiving routines.”
ErinoakKids offers a range of respite programming for children who are medically fragile and technology dependent, have autism or other complex care needs. These include day programs, overnight or weekend stays, and in 2017, 24/7 care at ErinoakKids’ new 26-bed Regional Respite Centre in Brampton. The Centre will be the largest of its kind in Ontario.
“CIBC is so pleased to help support the tremendous work done by ErinoakKids,” said James Sutherland, Vice-President, CIBC Wood Gundy and Vice-Chair of ErinoakKids Board of Directors. “This organization holds a strong place in my heart, and I am so proud that CIBC has joined me on this quest to help families who face such immense struggles.”
Today’s announcement brings CIBC’s total donations to ErinoakKids to $218,000 since 1999.
CIBC’s support will be directed to ErinoakKids’ $20 million In My Dreams fundraising campaign for three new sites set to open in spring 2017. The new sites – one in Brampton (including the Regional Respite Centre), a second in Oakville and a third in Mississauga, will bring together in one location, therapy, medical and support services for children and youth with disabilities. Funds raised will help equip the new buildings and deliver essential unfunded services, including the Respite program.
ErinoakKids Centre for Treatment and Development is Ontario’s largest children’s treatment centre, serving more than 15,000 children and youth annually who have physical and developmental disabilities, autism, communication disorders, blindness/low vision and hearing loss. Our mission is to help our clients achieve optimal levels of independence, learning, health and well-being. Did you know that a great way to “read” a book together is not reading the words at all?  The pictures in a book can tell a story all on their own and your child will enjoy looking at them and talking about them with you.
