Mississauga student wins Seawright Scholarship from ErinoakKids

October 24, 2014
Kelsey LeCoure of Mississauga is thrilled to be named the first recipient of the new Sean and Lynne Seawright Scholarship Award.

The $5,000 scholarship, established for ErinoakKids Centre for Treatment and Development by the Seawrights, will be presented annually to support the post-secondary education of a current client or graduate of ErinoakKids. LeCoure, 19, is in her second year of studies at Humber College, where she is pursuing a Bachelor’s degree in Child and Youth Care.
“Young people with disabilities can face huge financial barriers that prevent them from following their dreams,” explains Lynne Seawright. “Sean and I have been inspired by the determination and talent of the young people we have met at ErinoakKids. This scholarship enables us to have a small part in helping them fulfill their incredible potential.”

The Sean and Lynne Seawright Scholarship Award is designed to encourage students with a disability to develop independence and personal advocacy by pursuing a post-secondary education.

LeCoure was an ErinoakKids client for 15 years. At age 3 she was diagnosed with Osteogenesis Imperfecta Type 5, a rare condition that causes her bones to weaken and easily break, which has occurred more than 100 times. However, LeCoure does not let her physical challenges stand in the way of achieving her dream of working with children and youth with disabilities. After she completes her BA, LeCoure plans to complete a Masters degree in either Education or Physiotherapy.

“This scholarship will have a huge impact on my ability to achieve my goals,” says LeCoure. “Not only will it help pay for my transportation, books and tuition, the scholarship will let me spend more time mentoring other youth with disabilities and volunteering in my field to gain valuable experience. I am so thankful to the Seawrights for their generosity.”

Sean and Lynne Seawright presented LeCoure with her scholarship at the 2014 ErinoakKids Pride & Joy Awards this evening at the Oakville Conference Centre.

“We are deeply grateful to Sean and Lynne Seawright for establishing this important scholarship award,” added Bridget Fewtrell, President and CEO of ErinoakKids. “Young people with disabilities have so much to contribute to our community. This scholarship will help open doors to opportunities that might not otherwise be available to them.”

About ErinoakKids Centre for Treatment and Development
ErinoakKids Centre for Treatment and Development is Ontario’s largest Children’s Treatment Centre, serving more than 14,500 children and youth annually who have a wide range of physical and developmental disabilities, autism, communication disorders, as well as children who are blind and/or deaf. Our mission is to help our clients achieve optimal levels of independence, learning, health and well-being. Serving the regions of Halton and Peel as well as Dufferin County, ErinoakKids has approximately 650 staff and 11 sites from which we provide a comprehensive array of assessment, medical, therapy and support services that help children and their families. In 2011 the Ontario Government through the Ministry of Children and Youth Services approved our redevelopment project to enable ErinoakKids to consolidate and replace our existing patchwork of primarily leased and largely inaccessible facilities into three larger sites which will be ideally situated for easy access within our catchment area. These new facilities will more than double our treatment space and are being designed specifically for the care of children and youth with special needs. The new facilities are expected to open in 2017. For more information about ErinoakKids please visit
