News Release: New ErinoakKids facility to be located in north Oakville

September 20, 2013
(Mississauga ON) – Today ErinoakKids Centre for Treatment and Development announced that its new Halton region facility will be located at the intersection of the planned extensions to Third Line and Burnhamthorpe Road W. in north Oakville across from the new hospital. The facility is one of three to be constructed as part of the much-needed and long-anticipated ErinoakKids redevelopment project, approved in 2011 by the Ontario Ministry of Children and Youth Services (MCYS), and being overseen by Infrastructure Ontario. The project will enable ErinoakKids to consolidate its current patchwork of mostly leased and retrofitted office and commercial spaces — long since outgrown — into three larger sites designed specifically for the care of children and youth with disabilities and special needs. The ErinoakKids project is the largest in MCYS history and the first multi-site build of a Children’s Treatment Centre in the province.
In addition to serving Oakville clients and their families, the new location will enable ErinoakKids to more easily serve clients throughout the Halton Region section of its catchment area, which covers 3,707 square kilometers and also includes Peel Region and Dufferin County.
The Halton facility will be approximately 73,000 square feet and situated on 5.2 acres. Features will include:
  • 20 treatment rooms
  • Audiology, hearing aid fitting and dispensing area
  • 2 gyms for physiotherapy, group therapy and recreation therapy
  • Snoezelen room, providing a controlled sensory environment for children with developmental disabilities or autism
  • Fully accessible playground for recreation therapy, physiotherapy and occupational therapy
  • Adapted fitness facility to enable children and youth to use a variety of fitness equipment to build strength, endurance and flexibility,
  • Youth drop-in centre
  • Indoor and outdoor space to support skill and hobby development as well as pre-vocational training
The Ministry of Children and Youth Services is fully funding the construction of the new buildings. ErinoakKids has embarked on a $20-million campaign to equip the new facilities.
Construction is expected to begin in 2014 and be completed in 2016.
