Autism Resources

This collection of resources on Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) has been curated by the trained autism therapists and clinicians of ErinoakKids. We hope that these resources are helpful to ErinoakKids clients, families, community partners, and others working with children and youth with autism.

Applied Behaviour Analysis (ABA) is a scientific and evidence-based approach for working with individuals with ASD, and is the approach that underpins autism services at ErinoakKids. ABA uses the principles of human behaviour and focuses on the relationship between environment, behaviour, and consequences. Changes to behaviour with ABA are accomplished by increasing desirable skills or decreasing undesirable ones.

Therapists, parents, educators and others can use the principles of ABA to:

  • Help prevent challenging behaviours
  • Increase positive behaviours
  • Provide structure and routine
  • Help build skills
  • Enhance motivation
  •  Help achieve independence
  •  Increases ability to transfer skills in different settings

Understanding ABA Language:

Reinforcement – Motivating a child

Prompting – Providing Assistance

Fading – Reducing Assistance

Generalization – Transferring Skills

Antecedent Strategies – Proactive strategies implemented before the behaviour develops

Functional Behaviour Assessment – Determining the reason for a behaviour
