Circles Around Me Group (ages 5 to 18)

The Virtual Circles Around Me Group helps children and youth who are struggling to interact appropriately with the people in their environment. Following the Circles program developed by Standfield in 1993, this effective curriculum teaches clients to sort people into different “circles” that extend out around their centre “Me” circle. The concepts of Touch, Talk, and Trust are applied to people in the different circles, so that your child learns that while a someone in the “family” circle can hug them closely, people in the “stranger” circle can wave at them. Circles clarifies social boundaries that can be confusing for children with special needs, as well as teach them the safest way to interact with everyone they meet!

Service Type: Large group

Parents are encouraged to help guide children during the sessions so they can follow along and support the development of these concepts during daily life activities as well. During the first session of the series, clinicians will interact and observe each child in order to assess each child’s initial skill level and identify goals to work towards. In Depth Service Planning Assessment* (up to age 18)

An interdisciplinary team will provide an in depth assessment of your child’s abilities across key skill areas, such as communication, social skills, imitation, visual performance, play, and daily living. During this assessment, the clinician will lead your family through a variety of activities and daily routines in order to observe your child’s functional skills. Once these assessments are completed, a third appointment will be scheduled to share assessment information and recommendations. You will be provided with an assessment summary, which can be used to help plan an intervention program and provide a starting point from which you can track your child’s progress. You may find it helpful to share this assessment summary with your child’s school team and other service providers

Making Better Choices Group (ages 5 to 13)

This group helps children who are struggling to solve simple problems independently. Using the "Kelso’s Choice" curriculum, our trained clinicians will use songs, stories and practice situations to help develop your child’s understanding of the difference between minor problems and serious problems, and empower them to develop appropriate strategies to address their own problems.

Service Type: Large group

Kelso the frog and his friends live at Willow Pond, where they encounter a range of everyday situations and use a framework of 9 of “Kelso’s Choices" to solve problems. The stories in the curriculum include everything from difficulty taking turns to dealing with bullying, and allow children to think about solving problems from an outside perspective. This removes the pressure from real life problem situations where it can be difficult for children to make good choices right in the moment. The practice of learning to choose one of “Kelso’s Choices” to help Kelso solve problems makes it easier for children to apply these same principles to solving their own small problems!

Some children may need a parent/caregiver with them while they participate in the group, to help provide support and encouragement. During the first session of the series, clinicians will interact and observe each child in order to assess each child’s initial skill level and identify goals to work towards. Separate groups will be held for children ages to 7, 8 to 10, and 11 to 13 years old.

POWER-Solving #1 Stepping Stones to Solving Life’s Everyday Problems

Your child will log into a virtual care session lead by our trained clinicians to work on solving problems without problem behaviour. Power Solving is a social problem-solving curriculum developed by Selbst & Gordon as a step-by-step process to help children develop their self-control and ability to regulate their actions when their emotions start to escalate. The program aims to teach independence with problem-solving by using the steps prescribed by POWER plus the 3D method of Discuss, Demonstrate, and Do. Speech and Language Assessment and Treatment Package (up to age 18)

Speech and Language services can support the prevention, identification, assessment, treatment, and the (re)habilitation of speech, language and swallowing/feeding disorders. Speech disorders include difficulty with production of speech sounds. Language disorders can affect the ability to understand others and/or express thoughts, ideas and feelings at a level consistent with developmental expectations.

Service Type: One to one

The Speech and Language Assessment and Treatment package will be individualized to meet your child’s specific speech needs. The first step will be an assessment of your child’s unique needs and strengths, conducted virtually by a Speech Language Pathologist (SLP), to assist with setting specific goals for your child’s speech. You and your child will then participate in six (1 hour) virtual care sessions with an SLP to support skill building in the identified goals and provide coaching on continuing to teach and build your child’s language abilities.
