Donate a Gift

Gifts such as new toys and books are essential items that are used by our clinicians, therapists and families to support children's ongoing development. Book and toy donations also help supplement the Longo Family Resource Centres, which allows families to access helpful things like our Resource and Toy Lending Libraries, free wifi, activities and craft sessions for kids and more.

Check out our Books and Toys Wish List!

Please note that due to our infection control and health and safety guidelines, we are only able to accept new, unopened items. This also ensures the health and safety of children who have fragile immune systems.

Auction and prize donations

ErinoakKids is very grateful to hold and participate in a variety of events in the community, many of which have an auction or prize component. If your business or organization would like to donate an item, please contact Fiona D'Silva-Coelho, Manager, Annual Giving, at 416-418-8289 or fdsilvacoelho@erinoakkids.ca for more information.

Bequests

A bequest is a gift made through a will and may include cash, marketable securities, closely held stock, real estate, or tangible personal property, which allows you to create a legacy for ErinoakKids Centre for Treatment and Development.

What are the types of bequests that are available?

Your legal and financial advisor will work with you to find the best option to meet your personal and philanthropic goals.  These are the most popular types of bequests to choose from:

  • Specific bequest: Designate a fixed dollar amount or specific property to ErinoakKids.

  • Residual or proportional bequest: Designate either your entire estate or a percentage of your estate after other specific bequests and payments are distributed. When you designate a portion of your estate to ErinoakKids, the bequest automatically adjusts in size as your estate increases or decreases over the years.

  • Contingent bequest: In the event of the death of the primary beneficiary named in the will, ErinoakKids would then become the beneficiary.

See suggested wording for bequests to ErinoakKids in this quick reference sheet.

What are the benefits of making a bequest to ErinoakKids?

Bequests can allow individuals to make much larger gifts to ErinoakKids than they could during their lifetime.

A bequest is a tax-effective way to support ErinoakKids, and your estate may claim gifts in the year of death equal to 100 per cent of your net income in that year and the preceding year.

You can support key priorities at ErinoakKids that meets your interests. We encourage you to consult with ErinoakKids staff member to discuss to ensure the fulfillment of your wishes.

Designations for bequests are revocable so you retain control of assets during your lifetime.

There is no minimum giving level for bequests.

Stocks and Securities

A gift of securities can have immediate impact on children and youth with physical, developmental, and communication disabilities. A donation of publicly traded securities, such as stocks, bonds or mutual funds, or stock options* is one of the easiest and most effective ways to support ErinoakKids. When you make your donation to a charity through securities, the capital gains tax does not apply.  This allows you to give more to ErinoakKids and avoid paying capital gains taxes.

In contrast, if you choose to sell appreciated securities during your lifetime, or if these assets are liquidated through your estate, tax must be paid on 50% of the capital gains on those securities.  Donating securities directly to ErinoakKids during your lifetime or through your Will provides the opportunity to eliminate significant tax.  This tax break can significantly reduce the cost of your donation and allow you to give more than you would otherwise imagine possible.

Learn more about charitable tax credits from the Canada Revenue Agency here

*Stock options must be donated in the same year of exercising them and within 30 days after exercising.

What are the advantages of making a gift of securities?

The ErinoakKids’ charitable tax receipt is based on the full fair market value of the shares at the close of market on the day the securities are received in ErinoakKids’ brokerage account.

Donations that exceed the amount eligible for a tax credit in the year the gift is made may carry the excess credit forward up to five years.

Your estate will receive the same tax benefit if you leave securities to ErinoakKids through your will.

  1. Determine with your financial advisor the investments that would meet your philanthropic and financial goals.

Life Insurance

A gift of a life insurance policy allows you to make a considerable future gift to ErinoakKids Centre for Treatment and Development with relatively small budgeted monthly premiums.  Life insurance is a great tool used for tax and estate planning in order to maximize your gift to support children and youth with disabilities and special needs.

What are the options to make a gift of life insurance to ErinoakKids?

Your legal and financial advisor will work with you to find the best option to meet your personal and philanthropic goals.  You can give a new or existing life insurance policy to ErinoakKids.  Here are the most popular types of life insurance options to choose from:

  1. Transfer ownership to ErinoakKids of a paid-up policy – When you transfer ownership of your life insurance policy with ErinoakKids named as the beneficiary, you can receive a charitable tax receipt to use during your lifetime for the fair market value of the policy.  Or you can defer the tax receipt for your estate, in which ErinoakKids would receive the insurance proceeds like any beneficiary. The charitable tax receipt from ErinoakKids would qualify your estate for a tax credit that can offset the income tax liability.

  2. Transfer ownership to ErinoakKids of a partially paid policy - When you transfer ownership of partially paid policy with ErinoakKids named as the beneficiary, you can receive a charitable tax receipt for the fair market value of the policy and annual tax receipts for your ongoing premium payments. ErinoakKids will receive the proceeds of the life insurance upon your death.

  3. Purchase a new policy with ErinoakKids as the owner and beneficiary – You will receive annual tax receipts for your ongoing premium payments.  Upon your death, ErinoakKids will receive the proceeds of the life insurance and your estate will receive a charitable tax receipt equal to the policy’s death benefit.

What are the benefits of making a gift of life insurance to ErinoakKids?

  1. A gift of life insurance may allow you to make a larger gift than you could make from your current disposable income.

  2. The insurance benefit will eventually be paid directly to ErinoakKids and is separate from your estate, therefore no administrative costs or probate fees.

  3. There is no minimum gift level for gifts of life insurance.

  4. You can support an ErinoakKids priority that meets your interest.  If you would like to specify a designation for your gift, please consult with the ErinoakKids Philanthropy team.

Set up an Endowment

An Endowment Fund is a charitable investment that permanently invests your gift to provide a yearly income to support children and families on an ongoing basis with medical, therapy, and support services at ErinoakKids Centre for Treatment and Development.   When you endow a gift, it is structured so that the principal amount is invested and preserved, while only the investment income is used on an annual basis to benefit ErinoakKids.

The opportunity to establish an endowment is a great option for donors who wish to make transformative impact for ErinoakKids that will have direct immediate impact and continue to support ErinoakKids in perpetuity.  An endowed gift ensures that children and youth with disabilities and special needs today and in the future will have access to a comprehensive range of services that will help them achieve optimal levels of independence, learning, health and well-being.

What are the options to make an endowed gift to ErinoakKids?

Your legal and financial advisor will work with you to find the best option to meet your personal and philanthropic goals.  Here are the types of endowment options to choose from:

  1. General Endowment – You can give to our general endowment fund, in which ErinoakKids utilizes to fulfill key priorities and provide sustainable long-term funding for our programs and services.

  2. Named and Specified Endowment Funds – Most endowments are named in honour of the donor and may be pledged over a three to five year period with a minimum gift of $25,000.  A specified endowment fund at ErinoakKids can be established to fulfill specific goals like supporting a particular program, equipment, or key ErinoakKids priorities.  You can support an ErinoakKids priority that meets your interest.  If you would like to specify a designation for your endowment gift, please consult with the ErinoakKids Philanthropy team.

How does ErinoakKids administer their endowments?

ErinoakKids adheres to the highest fiduciary and steward standards for our endowment funds.  ErinoakKids is managed actively according to the guidelines established by the Board of Directors and our Finance and Investment Committees, which also approves any changes in asset mix and distribution policy.  The overall objectives of the endowment fund guidelines are to obtain a total return (yield plus appreciation) that will provide consistent sustainable income, while preserving the principle.

ErinoakKids will provide annual impact and financial reports to donors to report on the overall impact of funding to the respite program and your endowment fund performance.
