The goal of recreation therapy is to assist children and youth with special needs to develop lifelong leisure skills and to promote specific skill acquisition (as identified by the family or therapist) while promoting community interaction.

Recreation Therapy is often delivered in specialized groups but can also occur in a one-on-one setting and can serve to enhance therapy goals of clients.

Recreation Therapy is a complementary service that supports the achievement of measurable goals identified by the client and his or her therapy team in order to enhance skill development. Recreation therapy uses traditional-style recreation groups (e.g. yoga) to support achievement of the goals in individual therapy or in a group setting.

Referrals:

Referrals for service include clients who are unable to access community recreation programs and present with:

  • physical or developmental disabilities
  • identified specific therapeutic goals
  • adaptive equipment needs who require information about community recreation programs

Referrals are accessed through an internal referral process initiated by clinicians on an ErinoakKids client’s service team. A client must be receiving at least one ErinoakKids core (main) service to access Recreation Therapy.

Recreation Participation Groups

Recreation Participation Groups are offered on a fee-for-service basis and encourage participation in a recreation group. Recreation Participation programs promote a healthy lifestyle and the development of social skills. Families can choose the program that is right for their child, and are welcome to register for programs. Recreation Participation is delivered in groups including

  • sports and active programs
  • music
  • drama
  • creative arts

Families are invited to review and register for programs offered at ErinoakKids or local community recreation providers.

You can also take a look at other Community Programs happening in the Halton and Peel area.
